Information About Autozone

AutoZone is a Memphis, Tennessee-based company that is primarily involved in the sale of automotive parts to retail customers. Most parts carried by the auto parts chain of stores are intended as replacement components for light trucks and passenger cars for individuals willing to work on their vehicles themselves. There are currently more than 4,000 AutoZone locations scattered throughout 48 states and Washington, D.C. There are also 84 stores in Mexico, which is the only other country where the company is operating at the moment. AutoZone employs 44,600 full- and part-time staff.

The origins of AutoZone lie in the grocer Malone & Hyde. For years, what is now AutoZone was just a division of the wholesale grocer. Its name was originally Auto Shack, but under legal pressure from Radio Shack, the name was changed to AutoZone. This occurred after the grocery segment of the business was sold off.

AutoZone’s stock is publicly traded on the New York Stock Exchange. The ticker symbol is AZO. It went public in 1991. After a 2008 merger with CSK Auto, the company also does business under the name Checker Auto Parts. Schucks and Kragen are other names that AutoZone uses.

AutoZone Brands

AutoZone is well known for car batteries marketed under its private label. Valuecraft, Duralast, and Duralast Gold. Other parts are also manufactured by third parties under AutoZone’s labels, but batteries are their hallmark product. From a non-product standpoint, AutoZone prides itself on its customer service, and often touts it in advertising campaigns. Many people do not know it, but AutoZone sells diagnostic and repair software through ALLDATA. The company also uses ALLDATA as an outlet for selling diagnostic and repair information.

The company also has a history of being alleged of patent infringement. A case was brought against AutoZone in 2006 by Orion IP, LLC. Orion accused AutoZone of infringing on two different patents. In 2007, the case was settled, with Orion receiving an undisclosed amount of compensation. The case was then dismissed. A separate accusation was made against AutoZone in 2009 regarding a patent held by Lisle Corporation. The case is still ongoing.

Major competitors include retail giant Wal-Mart. Others, such as Pep Boys Auto and Genuine Parts, are more regional in nature and do not have the widespread footprint that AutoZone enjoys across most of the US.
