Kellogg’s Special K Information

The roots of the Kellogg Company can be traced back to 1906, when W. K. Kellogg began marketing a ready-to-eat breakfast cereal as the Battle Creek Toasted Corn Flake Company. The product was an adaptation of a recipe used at the Battle Creek Sanatorium, where W. K. and his brother John had once worked. The corn flakes were extremely successful, and the company was renamed the Kellogg Company in 1922. From its modest beginnings, Kellogg’s has grown into a major corporation with sales of over $12 billion annually in more than 175 countries and manufacturing plants in 18 countries. Among its brands are Keebler, Cheez-It, Famous Amos, Kashi, Eggo, Gardenburger, and Pop-Tarts.

In 1956, Kellogg’s introduced its original Special K cereal, the first to be marketed as a weight loss product. A blend of wheat and rice, the cereal was marketed with slogans such as, “Give us 2 weeks and we’ll take off the weight” and more recently, “Take the Special K Challenge.” Currently there are several varieties of Special K available in the United States. These include Special K Original, Cinnamon Pecan, Chocolatey Delight, Red Berries, Fruit & Yogurt, Blueberry, and Vanilla Almond.

Building on the success of Special K cereal as a weight loss food, Kellogg’s introduced additional Special K products. Special K meal bars, cereal bars, and snack bars are available in a wide range of flavors. In 2006, the company launched its Special K2O Protein Water, a protein and (as of 2007) fiber enhanced beverage containing 50 calories for a 16 ounce drink. Now available as a powder that consumers add to their own water, Special K2O Protein Water Mix comes in Strawberry Kiwi, Iced Tea, and Pink Lemonade flavors. Special K Protein Shakes, available in milk chocolate, strawberry, and French vanilla, are marketed as high protein meal alternatives for a quick and convenient breakfast or lunch. The most recent additions to the line are the Special K crackers, available in Multi-Grain or Italian Tomato and Herb.

Customers can register at www.SpecialK.com to receive news about Special K products and promotions. Recent promotions have included a $10 voucher toward a jeans purchase and a low cost workout DVD. They can also sign up for the Special K Challenge, design their own weight loss plan, and receive support and advice.

The Special K Challenge is designed to be a simple to follow weight loss plan which the individual can customize. Essentially, it asks participants to replace two meals a day with their choice of a serving of Special K cereal, a Special K Protein Shake, or a Special K Protein Meal Bar. Two snacks, chosen from Special K products such as cereal bars, fruit crisps, or crackers, can be eaten at any time. The third meal of the day is to be a normal meal, although the site does offer suggestions and recipes for sensible, appropriate meals.

Find Kellogg’s Special K Coupon Codes, Deals, and Promotional Discounts

Kellogg’s frequently makes coupons available for its Special K products. To find coupons online, go to www.kelloggs.com and then select “Coupons” from the bar on the left side of your screen. Kellogg’s sometimes includes Special K as one of several qualifying cereals on a “generic” coupon, but generally the brand stands alone. The company also makes coupons for the Special K Protein Shakes and various bars available at frequent intervals. Most coupons are for specific items in the Special K line, such as a coupon for the Special K cereal and another for the Special K Protein Shakes. You can register at the Kellogg’s website to be notified of any new coupons the company makes available.

You can also find Special K coupons inserted in many of the nation’s Sunday newspapers. These are most often in the “booklets” of coupons and are seldom individual flyers. Kellogg’s rarely uses direct mail for its coupons.
