Ben and Jerry’s Background Information

When they hear the words “Ben and Jerry’s ice cream”, many people may think of frozen treats with colorful quirky names such as Cherry Garcia, or Chunky Monkey. However, this is more than just a company which makes ice cream, yogurt, sorbet, and frozen novelties. It is a company which strives to improve the quality of life for people everywhere.

In its mission statement, the company expresses a desire to eliminate social injustice through its business activities. The company is very concerned with sustainable farming, and improving economic opportunities for those who have been denied them. It strives to show respect for its employees and the communities in which they live and work.

Founders Ben Cohen and Jerry Greenfield met and became friends in the seventh grade. After completing a correspondence course on ice cream making through Pennsylvania State University, they opened their first store in 1978. Their twelve-hundred dollar investment turned an old gas station in Burlington Vermont in to what would eventually become a company with stores throughout The United States and many other countries. In 1979, they started the tradition known as “Free Cone Day” to show appreciation to their employees and to the community. In 1981, the first Ben and Jerry’s franchise was opened in Shelburne Vermont. Ben Cohen and Jerry Greenfield were named U.S. Small Business Persons of the Year by then United States president Ronald Reagan in 1988.

The Ben and Jerry’s Foundation was established in 1985. Its purpose was to provide money for projects that would benefit the community. It also encourages company employees to get involved in community service.

In 2000, Ben and Jerry’s became part of Unilever, a Dutch corporation. The two founders are now no longer involved with the company itself though they may appear at the opening of a new store or other events. Ben Cohen is active in many causes. The company still is involved in social, political, and ecological causes. In 2009 for example, the Chubby hubby flavor was temporarily renamed Hubby Hubby in honor of the legalization of gay marriage in Vermont. Another flavor was renamed Yes Pecan after Barack Obama won the United States presidential election. The company donated all proceeds from the sale of that flavor to The Common cause Education fund.

There are Ben and Jerry’s scoop shops in at least 25 countries throughout the world including Finland, Turkey, and Thailand. Ben and Jerry’s ice cream was the first brand-name ice cream to ride in to space on the space shuttle. There are Ben and Jerry’s scoop shops on many Royal Caribbean cruise ships.

Some Ben and Jerry’s flavors are filled with chunks of things like cookie dough or chocolate covered pretzels. This is because one of the founders did not have a good sense of taste and needed large chunks in order to taste a flavor.
