History of Benjamin Moore

Benjamin Moore & Co. was started as Moore Brothers Paint Co. in 1883 by Benjamin and Robert Moore, two brothers living in Brooklyn. At its inception, the company only carried one product: “Moore’s Prepared Calsom Finish”. In 1892, Benjamin Moore created MURESCO paint, revolutionizing the paint industry. MURESCO was sold as a powder; only water needed to be added to get started painting. Prior to this, consumers had to buy the ingredients for the paint and concoct it themselves.

Over time, MURESCO became available in 32 colors and was easily blended. To meet the demand for paint that could be washed repeatedly, the company created Sani-Flat, an oil-based paint, in 1907. By 1928, Sani-Flat was available in 21 colors. During the 20s, Benjamin Moore also dabbled in decorating help. The company released pamphlets with interior decorating tips, as well as had its store staff offer advice and help. In fact, its decorating advice got so popular that in 1930, Benjamin Moore introduced “Betty Moore”. Betty became the company spokeswoman offering painting tips and decorating advice. The company hired numerous actresses to make store appearances as Betty Moore, offering her help in person as well as in the company pamphlets. In 1957, Regal Wall Satin Latex interior paint became popular as more consumers became interested in “do-it-yourself” paint jobs.

Through the 70s, more latex paints became available, such as Regal Aqua Velvet, the first latex paint with an eggshell finish that could be repeatedly washed. In 1982, Moore created another first with its Computer Color Matching System. By 2000, Benjamin Moore had joined with Berkshire Hathaway to create its wide variety of paints and paint products. Into the new millennium, Benjamin Moore has focused on sustainability and “green” awareness, creating paints that are easy on the environment and its consumers.
