History of Knott’s Berry Farm

Knott’s Berry Farm has been a fixture of the Buena Vista, California landscape since 1920. In 1920, Walter and Cordelia Knott relocated to a 20 acre spread of rented land and attempted to scratch out a living from farming. The Knott’s first years on the farm were far from easy, but the enterprising attitude and diehard American spirit of Walter Knott made a go of the farmland, all the way through the Great Depression. Walter even had a hand in the origination of an entirely new fruit, the boysenberry, invented by Rudolph Boysen and perfected by Walter Knott. Between 1927 and 1928, the Knott’s purchased a total of 20 acres of land and built the first building on the site of the now famous amusement park.

One of the main attractions of the park is the Chicken Dinner Restaurant, which served its first meal in 1934 to a humble dinner party of eight. The famous dining establishment now regularly serves more than 1.5 million guests per year. In order to keep the waiting diners happy in 1940, Walter built the first themed location in the future amusement park. Ghost Town, which originally began with the construction of the relocated Gold Trails Hotel from Prescott, Arizona, showcases several authentic gold rush era buildings. The second and third themed locations in the park were developed in the 1960s and 1970s, Fiesta Village and The Boardwalk, originally called Roaring 20s.

Cordelia Knott passed away in 1974, at the age of 84, with Walter continuing to reside at in the original farmhouse until his death in 1981. The Knott family continued the ownership and operation of the amusement park until the company was purchased in 1997. From a simple farm life of growing berries and selling jams, jellies and chicken dinners, the Knott’s created a wonderland of adventure that appeals to the entire family. The park is open almost year round, only closing completely on Christmas day and maintenance days at the beginning of the year. Park hours vary, depending on the day and time of year, generally opening at 10 in the morning every day. Special events are occasionally held for Girl Scout outings and other special group meetings.

Staying true to their dedication of family values, the Knott family developed Camp Snoopy in 1983. Camp Snoopy was the first themed area of an amusement park specifically designed for children. There are a dozen rides in this area specifically designed for children not tall enough or mature enough to ride the more adult rides available in the park.
