The Fort Worth Zoo, founded in 1909, is the oldest zoo in Texas. Beginning with a lion, 2 bears, an alligator, a coyote, a peacock and some rabbits, today it houses over 5000 animals. The city of Fort Worth owned and operated the zoo until 1991 when the Fort Worth Zoological Association took over the institution. Since then, the association has raised millions for new exhibits and improvements. The zoo greets over a million visitors annually. It has handicap access, food outlets, picnic areas and a train and has become one of the most popular attractions in the Dallas/Fort Worth area. The Fort Worth Zoo has many distinctions. Forty-two endangered species live there. It is the only zoo in the United States to have all four of the Great Apes. The zoo is an world leader in the conservation of Asian elephants and the only zoo to hatch and breed lesser flamingos. It also boasts one of the largest reptile collections in the country. The Yellow Rose Express train has long been a favorite of visitors. Today the zoo has 12 permanent exhibits: Penguins, World of Primates, Asian Falls, Raptor Canyons, Cheetahs, Flamingo Bay, Komodo Dragon, Meerkat Mounds, Australian Outback/Great Barrier Reef, African Savannah, Parrot Paradise, and Texas Wild. In the spring of 2010, the zoo will open the Museum of Living Art, a herpetarium.

Located off Colonial Parkway in Forest Park, near the Trinity River, the zoo is open 365 days a year. The zoo sponsors several special events and seasonal celebrations. Edventures are weekday classes for children. The Zoo Run occurs in April with 10K, 5K and one mile Fun Run to support the zoo. Beastro is a June fundraiser that features cuisine from area restaurants. In the summer, elementary students can attend Zoo camps on weekdays. Students in grades 9-12 may choose a resident camp to learn about zoo occupations and conservation issues. In the spring, 2 hour Saturday classes for children 2 through 12 target age appropriate topics. Parents can even schedule an overnight party at the zoo with activities, crafts, programs, morning tour and two meals included. Once a month from October to April, adult zoo fans can sign up for Photo Safari and an opportunity to take pictures of featured animals at breakfast. The zoo is also available for after-hours parties and company picnics at 4 venues. Professional catering can be arranged for groups of 300 to 1000 people.

The Fort Worth Zoo offers discounted tickets in several ways. Companies with over 300 employees can offer admission at discounted rates. Smaller companies get $1.00 discount coupons to offer to employees. Groups of 15 or more may get discounted admission by making reservations one week prior to their visit. The zoo offers gift packages that include admission, parking and Zoo Bucks. Zoo members receive discounts at the café and gift shops. School groups also receive discounts from early September to June 15. Student group visits require reservations made at least 10 days in advance and one chaperone with free admission for every 10 paid student admissions.
